You can let Mac OS X mount external disks without any user login. This keeps all removable disks mounted after log out and before log in and allows users using Remote Login as well as backup applications to access them.

If your Mac has a sudden motion sensor this can be disabled with Cocktail. The sudden motion sensor is meant to stop your disks if a sudden and possible dangerous motion is registered. An example is if you drop you Mac, if the sudden motion sensor is enabled your Mac will stop the disk to prevent the disk to fail as an result of the impact.
